Like pebbles on a riverbed, baroque freshwater pearls are never the same shape twice, and each has its own soft, uneven lustre. This choker strings them close together, with pairs of small beads in gold-plated or plain 925 silver between them to catch the light. It sits at the base of the neck, 38 cm long with a 5 cm extension. On its own it is easy and fresh; with the Mati necklace below it, it becomes the layered look of our photographs.
925 silver is 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with other metals for strength. Gold-plated means a thin layer of gold covers its surface, giving the warm yellow colour for a fraction of the price of solid gold. Because the layer is thin, it wears with time and friction, fastest where a piece rubs: the inside of a ring, a clasp, the back of an earring. Perfume, sweat, chlorine and salt water wear it faster. When the silver starts to show, the piece can be plated again. [PLACEHOLDER: owner to state the thickness and caratage of the gold layer, and whether the shop re-plates, and at what cost.]
925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver; the rest is other metals, which make it hard enough to wear. It has the bright, cool white of silver all the way through, so there is no layer to wear away. Over time it darkens in air and on contact with some foods, rubber and cosmetics; this is tarnish, a surface film that a silver polishing cloth removes. Wear it often and keep it in a closed pouch, and it stays bright. [PLACEHOLDER: owner to confirm whether silver pieces are left natural or rhodium-plated.]
A cultured pearl grown in a freshwater mussel. It is rarely perfectly round: its irregular shapes and soft lustre are part of its charm, and no two are alike. Pearls are soft and porous: put them on after perfume, wipe them after wearing and never use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Pearls are soft: put the choker on after perfume, never wear it in the shower or the sea, and store it flat, on its own.
