Plaka is the Greek word for a flat slab of stone, the kind that roofs the old houses of Epirus. This earring hangs two of them, one below the other: a small square at the lobe and a larger one beneath, its surface hammered and brushed so that it catches the light in streaks, with a freshwater pearl hanging from its lower edge. The contrast between rough metal and smooth pearl is the point. At 26 mm long, they are bold enough for the evening and calm enough for the office.
925 silver is 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with other metals for strength. Gold-plated means a thin layer of gold covers its surface, giving the warm yellow colour for a fraction of the price of solid gold. Because the layer is thin, it wears with time and friction, fastest where a piece rubs: the inside of a ring, a clasp, the back of an earring. Perfume, sweat, chlorine and salt water wear it faster. When the silver starts to show, the piece can be plated again. [PLACEHOLDER: owner to state the thickness and caratage of the gold layer, and whether the shop re-plates, and at what cost.]
925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver; the rest is other metals, which make it hard enough to wear. It has the bright, cool white of silver all the way through, so there is no layer to wear away. Over time it darkens in air and on contact with some foods, rubber and cosmetics; this is tarnish, a surface film that a silver polishing cloth removes. Wear it often and keep it in a closed pouch, and it stays bright. [PLACEHOLDER: owner to confirm whether silver pieces are left natural or rhodium-plated.]
A cultured pearl grown in a freshwater mussel. It is rarely perfectly round: its irregular shapes and soft lustre are part of its charm, and no two are alike. Pearls are soft and porous: put them on after perfume, wipe them after wearing and never use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Pearls go on last and come off first. Wipe them with a dry cloth after wearing; the hammered metal needs only the same soft cloth.
You have 14 days from receipt to withdraw, no reason needed, and 14 days from telling us to send the piece back. Engraved pieces and those made to your specifications are the exception. [PLACEHOLDER: to be reviewed by a lawyer.]
