Finding your ring size

European ring sizes are simply millimetres. Three ways to find yours at home, why the time of day matters, and what to do about a wide band or an open ring.

Three gold rings on a pale grey surface, from above: a wide band of twisted ropes with green stones, a split band with a square clear stone and a square green one, and a wide open bark-textured ring with three small green stones.

A European ring size is a measurement, not a code: it is the inside circumference of the ring in millimetres. A size 52 measures 52 mm around the inside, and a size 56 measures 56 mm. That makes it easy to find at home, with a ruler and a little care.

Measure a ring you already own. This is the most reliable way. Choose a ring that fits the finger you have in mind, lay it on a ruler and measure its inside diameter, edge to edge, in millimetres. Then find that diameter in our size guide: 16.6 mm, for example, is a size 52.

Or measure your finger. Cut a thin strip of paper, about 5 mm wide, and wrap it snugly around the base of the finger. Mark where it meets, unroll it and measure the length in millimetres: that is your EU size. Check the knuckle too: if it is wider than the base, use the larger measurement, because the ring has to pass over it.

Or come and try. If you can visit the shop in Metsovo, we will measure your finger there.

Measure at the right time. Fingers are slimmer in the cold and in the morning, and fuller in the heat, in the evening and after exercise. Measure two or three times, on different days if you can, and if you fall between two sizes, choose the larger.

Wide bands fit tighter. A wide ring covers more of the finger, so it feels snugger than a slim ring of the same size. For bands wider than about 6 mm, such as the Elato, go up one size.

Open rings adjust. Our open rings, such as the Vryo and the Limni, are open at the back and can be eased a little wider or narrower to fit the range of sizes given on each product page. Adjust them once, gently, by pressing with your fingers; bending an open ring back and forth weakens the metal.

UK and US sizes. If you know your size in another system, our size guide gives the nearest UK and US equivalents for every EU size from 44 to 64. The systems do not line up exactly, so treat the conversion as a guide.

Buying a ring as a surprise? Borrow a ring the person already wears on the right finger, for an hour, and measure it the first way. If that is impossible, choose an open ring, which leaves room for error.
